Fogg can't find a ship to take him to Liverpool but pays the captain of the Henrietta a bunch of money to take him as far as Bordeaux.After finding Passepartout, Fogg agrees to take a wind-sledge to the next stop, Omaha, where he can catch the next train.After soldiers from the fort come to their rescue and the train pulls to a stop, Fogg goes to rescue Passepartout, who has been taken captive.Before the duel gets started, the train is attacked by Sioux Indians outside Fort Kearney.Colonel Proctor is on the train and recognizes Fogg he agrees to duel with Fogg on the train.Fogg and company board a train, bound for New York.Fogg trades insults with an American, Colonel Stamp Proctor, and agrees to have a duel with him at a later date.He fights off several attackers, ripping his clothes.While out with Aouda and Fix, Fogg gets entangled in a political rally that turns into a rumble.On December 3rd, Fogg reaches San Francisco exactly on time, as he had expected.On the 23rd of November, Fogg has completed exactly half of his journey.Fogg, Passepartout, Aouda, and Fix board the General Grant to San Francisco.In Yokohama Fogg finds Passepartout and rescues him from the Japanese circus.
Fogg reaches the steamship, the Carnatic, in Shanghai and is able to take the vessel to Yokohama.Fogg, Aouda, and Fix board a different boat, the Tankadere, to try to catch the steamer at Shanghai even though Passepartout is lost.They try to board the steamer to Yokohama but the boat has already left. The Rangoon finally docks at Hong Kong on November 4th, and Fogg goes to find Aouda's cousin.The Rangoon encounters stormy seas between Singapore and Hong Kong, but Fogg isn't worried.The Rangoon docks at Singapore and Fogg and Aouda go for a carriage ride in the country before getting back on board.On the steamer, Fogg either confines himself to his cabin or can be found playing whist.Fogg's company boards a steamer, the Rangoon, bound for Hong Kong.Fogg pays a substantial fine and is allowed to depart. At Calcutta, Phileas Fogg and Passepartout are escorted to an English court and brought up on charges for entering a sacred Hindu temple.When the rescued woman awakens, he offers to take her to her relatives in Hong Kong.Fogg reaches Calcutta on October the 25th, just as he had intended.Fogg reaches Allahabad and intends to take the train from there to Benares and then on to Calcutta.In the middle of the jungle, Fogg decides to stop and rescue a woman who is being forced to commit suttee.Fogg pays a Parsee guide to take them and the elephant through the jungle.Sir Francis begs Fogg not to make the deal, but Fogg eventually offers 2,000 and is accepted.Fogg offers to pay a thousand pounds for an elephant to transport them through the jungle.The train stops outside of Rothal, and the passengers are forced to disembark because the railway isn't finished.Upon reaching Bombay, Fogg and Passepartout share a train compartment with Sir Francis Cromarty, who is also taking the train to Calcutta.To pass the time, Fogg plays whist with a bunch of other folks on the Mongolia.When the steamer stops at Suez on October 9, Fogg disembarks to get his passport stamped, but does not care to view the scenery.Phileas catches a steamer named the Mongolia in Brindisi and takes it via the Suez Canal to Bombay.Many men in London begin placing bets that Phileas Fogg will not be able to make it back to London in eighty days.Phileas leaves that evening with Passepartout on a train bound for Paris.On October 2, 1872, Phileas Fogg accepts a wager proposed by the men at his club to go around the world in eighty days or forfeit 20,000 pounds.
